As in other countries, the prevalence of diabetes is still increasing in Algeria, reaching 14.4% of the population between 18 and 69 years, i.e. about 4 million of people living with diabetes in Algeria in 2018. The DiabCare study carried out in 2008 shows an average HbA 1c level of 8.5% and that only 18.7% of patients reached a value <7%. On the other hand, there is a great weakness in the management of diabetes in our country. However, this study has limitations: it gave only a snapshot of the situation, and do not report a follow-up. Another bias is that the study was carried out in some hospital structures. To allow a regular and sustainable evaluation, health authorities in Algeria, in partnership with Novo Nordisk laboratories, launched in 2013 the “Barometer” project which aims to measure and share performance indicators based on the 2013 International Diabetes Federation recommendations (appendix). This first report deals with baseline characteristics of type 2 diabetic patients enrolled in the different “Barometer centers” between 2013 and 2017. Micro-and macrovascular complications analyses will be published later.
