Research has shown that large volumes of ice can be transported in pipelines underground, particularly in plastic piping. Tests on vertical ice silos have shown that a large amount of cooling can be transferred effectively in a relatively small excavation or structure. All that is now required is the refinement of these systems to the point at which their use becomes as commonplace on deep mines as is the use of surface chilled-water installations combined with large pumping and energy-recovery systems. An application at East Rand Proprietary Mines, Ltd. , is discussed in the article.
