Long-term results of mini open release technique of common extensor origin for tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis)

JK Practitioner, Volume 18, No. 1-2, Year 2013

In this retrospective study the long-term results of a mini open release technique of the common extensor origin were evaluated in 59 patients (61 elbows) presenting with resistant tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis). These patients were treated by one surgeon between 1991 and 2007 and followed for a mean period of nine years (range 6- 17 years). In all the patients symptoms had been present for between six months and four years. All patients had received a minimum of six months conservative treatment prior to operation.Outcome measures included Mayo Elbow Performance Score (MEPS), assessment of the degree of impairment at work and in performing activities of daily living and patient satisfaction.51 patients were available for assessment of the final results. There were low operative complication rates in the cohort studied and long term results were 92% excellent, 6% good and 2% poor. It was concluded that the mini technique of release of the common extensor origin as described is a simple and reliable surgical procedure for resistant tennis elbow and is associated with low morbidity and good to excellent long term results.
