SHINING A SPOTLIGHT ON AFRICAN RESEARCH

A clinical trial of group counselling for changing high-risk sexual behaviour in men

Counselling Psychology Quarterly, Volume 11, No. 1, Year 1998

This study investigates the efficacy of group counselling, based upon a unified theory, as a strategy for changing high-risk sexual behaviour in men. Given the complexity of the behaviour, there was evident merit in using a synergetic methodology. A randomized control design with follow-up was used, evaluated by quantitative and qualitative assessment. The results show that the group counselling changed the behaviour of the men. There was a threefold reduction in re-infection rates and an increase in the number of times condoms were used in high-risk situations in the counselled group as opposed to the controls.
