African buffalo Syncerus caffer extirpated on Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea

Journal of African Zoology, Volume 111, No. 1, Year 1997

There is evidence for the former, widespread, occurrence of the African forest buffalo on Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea. No indication of surviving individuals was found during 4.5 months of field surveys on Bioko Island between 1986 and 1992. This species was probably extirpated from the island sometime between 1860 and 1910 as a result of over-hunting.
