Towards a classification scheme for aphasic syntax

International Journal of Language & Communication Disorders, Volume 21, No. 1, Year 1986

The expressive syntax of 38 aphasics was elicited and analysed according to the Language Assessment, Remediation and Screening Procedure. The results were subjected to hierarchical cluster analysis, from which six discrete subgroups were derived ranging from least to most syntactically competent. Syntactic characteristics of these groups are described and possible explanations for group differences are suggested based on neurological and biographical data. A dynamic explanation taking into account the aphasic's adaptation to his communicative deficit is explored and the implications of a syntactic classification scheme are discussed. 1986 Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists
