Peptic ulcer was shown to be common in a rural area of Togo. A series of 45 cases underwent surgery. Young males in the poorest social classes were predominantly affected. Ulceration was mainly in the duodenum; fibrosis was common, leading to pyloric stenosis. The main complaint was obstruction; perforation was not seen. These stenotic ulcers differ from those seen in Europe, but are similar to those described from rural populations in other parts of Africa and India.
