A retrospective survey of appendicectomies performed at Mulago Hospital, Kampala, during the 6-year period 1970/1975 is presented together with analysis of the histological findings in 241 appendices. Seventy-one (29.5%) of the appendices subjected to histological study were reported normal. The operational error was greater in females. This study suggests that appendicitis in Uganda, particularly in the urban inhabitants, is on the increase. It is suggested that diagnosis of appendicitis in the females in their 2nd and 3rd decades of life, must be cautiously considered.
