Description
In a pilot survey for abnormal haemoglobins in Aleppo, Syrian Arab Republic, 25 blood samples from children admitted to the National Hospital were examined. No abnormal haemoglobin was detected. In 12 children, the haematological and biochemical criteria of β-thalassaemia minor were found. One child was suspected of suffering from thalassaemia major. In two children, persistent foetal haemoglobin of the type described in West and Central Africa was detected. The significance of these findings is discussed. © 1970 S. Karger AG, Basel.
