Consensus for the management of hyperglycemia in type 2 diabetes in sub-Saharan Africa. Written by a group of African experts on diabetes

Medecine des Maladies Metaboliques, Volume 13, No. 2, Year 2019

In sub-Saharan Africa, an appropriate management of diabetes mellitus is seriously limited by lack of financial resources, lack of specialists, and organizational problems. Therefore a group of French-speaking experts in the field of diabetes from that area have worked together to propose an adapted consensus on the management of the disease (type 2 diabetes) taking into account some African particularities. Thus a review of African and international literature on the subject has enabled the expert group to propose recommendations adapted to socio-economic and cultural facts and organizational problems that could be integrated into national health policies. These recommendations are also based on the availability and accessibility of antidiabetic drugs in sub-Saharan Africa, and thus must be regularly revised and adapted according to local situations and availability of new antidiabetic drugs.
