Global Bridges Oncology Nurse Seminar: A Collaborative Education Program for Oncology Nurses in Sub-Saharan Africa

Journal of Radiology Nursing, Volume 42, No. 1, Year 2023

Cancer is a leading cause of death that disproportionately affects low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). LMICs experience a deficit in access to radiotherapy equipment and technology, oncology staff, and educational opportunities. Global Bridges Oncology (GBO) was founded to develop capacity of LMIC health care workers in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Collaborating directly with oncology nurses from Africa, our institution's advanced practice providers (APP) expanded this program to co-develop the GBO Nurse Seminar. The seminar began with a monthly hour-long didactic session with nurses at a teaching hospital in Kumasi, Ghana. After successful implementation, the program expanded to include Kenya and Zambia. Our goal is to continue expanding the lecture series inclusive of other LMICs with certificates of participation and expand on-site training workshops.
