Pneumatic balloon dilation of mega-esophagus achalasia in Cotonou

Journal Africain d'Hepato-Gastroenterologie, Volume 8, No. 3, Year 2014

Achalasia evolving to mega-oesophagus is considered in our population as a primary oesophageal motility disorder after ruling out an organic lesion. Previously, only surgical treatment was possible. We report our experience of achalasia pneumatic dilation about three patients out of five consecutively admitted for chronic dysphagia on megaoesophagus. Balloon dilation was performed under propofol anesthesia without complication. The outcome was favourable with satisfying clinical improvement since 12 months of follow-up.
