In the present communication, the volatile compositions of the leaves and rhizomes of Alpinia oblongifolia Hayata were reported. The essential oils were obtained by separate hydrodistillation of the air-dried leaves and rhizomes of A. oblongifolia which were collected from Xuan Lien Natural Reserve, Thanh Hoa Province, Vietnam, in May 2014. The yields of the essential oils were 0.18% (v/w) and 0.12 (v/w) respectively, calculated on a dry weight basis. The chemical compositions of the oils were characterized by using gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The result indicated that β-pinene (17.9% and 26.2%), α-phellandrene (3.5% and 11.7%), limonene (11.1% and 14.5%) and methyl cinnamate (16.7% and 4.1%) were the significant compounds of the essential oils. This is the first report on the volatile constituents of A. oblongifolia.
