Klebsiella pneumoniae necrotizing cervical lymphadenitis

Otorinolaringologia, Volume 70, No. 3, Year 2020

Klebsiella pneumoniae cervical lymphadenitis, however, is an extremely rare clinical condition. To our knowledge, no cases have been documented in the literature. The Authors present the case of a 44-year-old man with a history of fever, acute right-side painful neck swelling. A neck computed tomography (CT) scan demonstrated right cervical level 2 lymphadenopathy. The largest node measures about 3.0 x 2.2 cm, with small intranodal necrosis and exerting mass effect on the ipsilateral internal jugular vein. Both blood cultures and fine needle aspiration culture were positive for Klebsiella pneumoniae however the urinary and throat culture were negative. After a 10-day course of ceftriaxone and clindamycin with dexamethasone the patient improved completely and the swelling disappeared with no palpable neck masses.
