Carbon black has been used as the most common filler of rubber, but its unstable price is a disadvantage. Calcium carbonate appears to be a good substitute. It is abundant and cheap. The work described in this paper shows that the degree of reinforcement of calcium carbonate fillers in elastomers depends on particle size, level of loading, and the physical and chemical nature of the fillers.
