Description
The prevalence of fungi causing deep mycotic infections has been investigated in 630 wild animals belonging to 11 species and 10 genera of small mammals. None of the animals investigated showed any gross or microscopic evidence of mycotic infection although a variety of fungi were recovered from their lungs. The only recognised pathogenic fungus encountered was Allescheria boydii. It was isolated on two occasions each from lungs of Tatera indica (The Indian Gerbil) and Meriones hurriane (The Desert Gerbil). A few potential fungal pathogens such as Candida albicans, Geotrichum candidum and Aspergillus fumigatus were also recovered occasionally but these had no etiological significance in the animals examined. © 1972 Blackwell Publishing
