Synthesis, characterization and antimicrobial activity of Chitosan/Polyvinyl Alcohol blend doped with Hibiscus Sabdariffa L. extract

Journal of Molecular Structure, Volume 1197, Year 2019

Chitosan/Polyvinyl Alcohol (CS/PVA) blend containing different amount of Hibiscus Sabdariffa L. extract were successfully synthesized by casting technique to enhance the antimicrobial activity of (CS/PVA). Structure, optical, morphological and antimicrobial characterization of (CS/PVA/Hibiscus S. L. extract) blend were investigated using X-ray diffraction, FTIR absorption spectroscopy, UV–Visible spectrometer, Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope, and In vitro antimicrobial studies. XRD and FTIR reveal the strong interaction between Hibiscus S. L. extracts and CS/PVA. The change in the optical energy gap confirms the incorporation of Hibiscus S. L. extract into CS/PVA film. In vitro antimicrobial behavior of the samples and their calculated activity index observed increase of the diameter zone and activity index in all cases by increasing of Hibiscus S. L. extract content compared to a standard drug via simple minimum inhibition zone (MIZ) standard routine. The obtained results indicated that addition of Hibiscus Sabdariffa L. Extract to (CS/PVA) greatly enhanced the antimicrobial activity of the blend that implies this system can be used in many antimicrobial applications.
