Malaria and asymptomatic parasitaemia in Gabonese infants under the age of 3 months

Acta Tropica, Volume 95, No. 2, Year 2005

We determined the incidence of both malaria and asymptomatic parasitaemia in infants under the age of 3 months within the framework of a longitudinal cohort study in Lambaréné, Gabon, between December 2002 and July 2004. Of 878 infants who were included at birth, we identified malaria in three infants and, additionally, asymptomatic parasitaemia in six infants. The malaria incidence density was 1.1/1000 person-months or 0.1% of observations. Our findings underpin the notion that the incidence of malaria and parasitaemia in infants below the age of 3 months is very low. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
