Total decompression of the facial nerve in osteopetrosis (marble bone disease, morbus Albers Schonberg)

ORL, Volume 36, No. 1, Year 1974

Benign and malignant osteopetrosis is reviewed with special reference to deafness and facial palsy. Recurrent, acute attacks of facial palsy, identical to Bell's palsy, occur frequently as well as syndactyly associated with abnormal or absent finger nails. Radiological examination of all cases of facial palsy, especially in children, is recommended to rule out this not so rare condition. Total decompression of the facial nerve is indicated in the benign type and is a feasible project despite the thick bone.
