Experimental and Simulation Investigations of Mechanical Properties and Gamma Radiation Shielding of Lithium Cadmium Gadolinium Silicate Glasses Doped Erbium Ions

Silicon, Volume 14, No. 6, Year 2022

Melt-quenching method used to fabricate SiO2-Li2O - CdO – Gd2O3 – Er2O3 glass system. The XRD diffractometer procedure is used to check the status of these samples. The density of LCGS sample increases with the addition of Er2O3. The mechanical characteristics are linked with Fourier-transform infrared spectra. Ultrasonic speeds and elastic moduli (experimental and theoretical) are increased, where the vL and vT were arranged between 5375 and 5490 m/s and 3105–3235 m/s respectively. This behaviour is correlated to the substitution of Er-O with Cd-O linkages. A widespread examination of γ ray (Ba133, Cs137 and Co60) interaction properties are done for prepared glass samples to discover its possible uses in securing against gamma radiations. The μm parameter found to be depend on concentration of Er2O3 in the glass, it increases from 10.215 to 10.593 (cm2/g) at energy 356 keV and from 5.249 to 5.396 (cm2/g) at energy 1332 keV. The HVL is decreased from 2.17 to 1. 86 cm at energy 356 keV and from 4.23 to 3.65 cm at energy 1332 keV and the mean free path λ also decreased from 3.14 to 2.68 cm and from 6.12 to 5.28 cm at energies 356 and 1332 keV respectively with the increase of erbium concentration from 0 to 2 mol%. Our findings show that a superior G5 glass sample for several photon interaction assets across the broad energy scale of γ ray.
