SHINING A SPOTLIGHT ON AFRICAN RESEARCH

Sarcoidosis; [Sarcoidosis]

Medicine (Spain), Volume 11, No. 34, Year 2013

Sarcoidosis is a system multisyndrome characterized by granulomatous inflammation of affected organs. It is a worldwide disease affecting mainly young adults with female predominance. The cause is unknown, but some authors have proposed that it may be triggered by the contact with an antigen that causes an abnormal immune response in a genetically susceptible host. The most common organs affected by sarcoidosis are the lymph nodes and the lungs, followed by the skin and eyes. The diagnosis is based on clinical and radiological manifestations, histological demonstration of non-necrotizing granuloma and the exclusion of other granulomatous diseases. Many cases are asymptomatic or have only mild symptoms. Glucocorticoids are generally prescribed in patients with moderate or severe respiratory symptoms, deterioration of respiratory function, progressive lung disease in imaging tests or extrapulmonary manifestations.
