Sports practice aptitude assessment and prevention of cardiovascular events

Cinesiologie, Volume 47, No. 237, Year 2008

In Algeria, the competitive sportsmen benefit from a total management at the level of the sport medicine department of Doctor Maouche Hospital in Algiers. Originally, the National Centre of Sport Medicine, located within the Olympic estate, operational since 1985, included: Traumatology and orthopaedy department Physiotherapy department Sport Medicine department Cardiology department Dental surgery department Medical biology department Radiology department The examination for the sport practice aptitude being mandatory, all the sportmen from the national elite are regulary subjects to medical checkups according to a planning that is drawn up at the begining of every sport season. The National Centre of Sport Medicine was, at that time, under the sports Ministry supervision. In 1988, the Centre went under the Health Ministry, and in 1994, the Traumatolgy and orthopaedy department was transferred to an another hospital in Algiers, and replaced by a cardiac surgery department and a vascular surgery department. The management of the sportsmen was then only limited to the sport medicine department. The other departments moved towards the management of the cardiovascular pathology. Only the cardiology department of the hospital kept a weekly consultation of sport cardiology. The sportsmen are directed to cardiology from the Sport Medicine department in case of cardiovascular pathology suspicion. Between January 1995 and December 2004, 4298 managements have been provided by the cardiology department. The initial check up systematically included a clinical examination with an ECG, as well as an echocardiography. The other examinations requested according the initial check up results (vascular echography, exercise test, 24 hours ECG, ABPM, stress ECG, myocardial scintigraphy, coronary angiography,...). Throughout chis article, we report the 10 years experience of this sport cardiology consultation.
