Scintigraphic aspects of the thyroid pathology at the University Hospital Yalgado Ouédraogo (CHU-YO): About 95 cases collected from January 2012 to December 2013

Medecine Nucleaire, Volume 39, Year 2015

Thyroid scintigraphy is an imaging method, which was introduced in January 2012 in Ouagadougou. Through this study, we wanted to describe some scintigraphic aspects of the thyroid pathology at the University hospital Yalgado Ouédraogo. The study is a retrospective one with a descriptive aim. It took place from January 2012 to December 2013. Ninety-five (95) patients were included in the study. They were all presenting a thyroid pathology and had benefited from a thyroid scintigraphy. Women were the most represented group and accounted for 81.05%. The average age of patients was 43 years. Goiter was the principal indication with 43% of the cases, followed by hyperthyroid representing 24% of the patients. Eighty-one percent of thyroids were in normal cervical position and 13% were plunging. Fifty-two percent of nodules were increased uptake, and 36% decreased uptake; 46.66% of the decreased uptake nodules were cold. At the thyroid uptake, a hypoavidity was noted for 38% of the patients and an absence of uptake in 5% of the cases. Thyroid fixing was homogeneous at 36% of the patients and the thyroid had a heterogeneous aspect associated with nodules in 25% of the cases. There was an agreement between the nodules with the scintigraphy and those found with ultrasound. Thyroid scintigraphy keeps an important place in the assessment of the thyroid pathology, beside the other techniques of imagery. It contributes to a better care provision to the patients through functional data that it provides on the thyroid.
